49. The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers, March 10, 2022


Master Mick Cullen invited several Livery Companies’ Masters and Clerks to the Hackney Carriage Drivers’ Spring Court Dinner at Drapers’ Hall. The Principal Guest was Alderman Tim Hailes, who made an impassioned plea to keep City of London streets open to taxis. This was much appreciated by the Company and the taxi users present.

 Over the years, Water Conservators have been big supporters of the Hackney Carriage Drivers major charity event – the trip to Disneyland, Paris. These events have been organised by a small group supporting Past Master Phil Davis, whose name is inextricably linked to the event.

 


The Children's Magical Taxi Tour to Disneyland Paris will take place on 16 September 2022, after a two-year break for the pandemic. This year will be the 27th year that the Company have organised the three-day trip of a lifetime for children with life threatening diseases to Disneyland Paris. They have now taken 5,000 children on this trip. A convoy of over 100 London taxis, escorted by the Police, London Ambulance Service and AA assists them throughout the trip.

Donors have the opportunity of seeing the Children leave after the 'Big Breakfast' in Canary Wharf, when the giant convoy departs to catch the ferry at Dover.

My thanks go to the Master for a pleasant evening amongst old friends.

It is customary for the Master to arrange a visit to somewhere that reflects his and the Company’s interests. For the last year, my Consort, Georgina, has been trying to get the Venetian authorities to allow us to visit the flood defences. Due to the pandemic, this was not possible but the boat we stayed on, the Michelangelo , did approach some of them. Mostly tied up near St Mark’s Square, we had the opportunity to visit the main sights using the water buses, as well as taking the ‘secret itinerary’ tour at the Doge’s Palace, visiting the prison cells where Casanova was held – until he escaped!   As usual (for us anyway) we got lost on day 1 – but they say if you haven’t got lost walking in Venice, you haven’t been there! I am grateful for Georgina’s hard work, without which this visit would not have been possible, and the endless good humour of the Conservators and partners who made this visit so enjoyable.

56. Tour of the Middle Temple, March 30, 2022

The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, commonly known simply as Middle Temple, is one of the four Inns of Court exclusively entitled to call their members to the English Bar as barristers. The other are the Inner Temple, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn. The Middle Temple has been at the heart of the legal system since the sixteenth century. With ancient wooden panels dating from 1597, stunning stained glass and the fine timber roof of Middle Temple Hall, the Middle Temple is a unique piece of London history. The Consort’s tour for Company Members and friends was guided by ‘Tim’, starting with the Middle Temple Hall , with its magnificent double-hammer beam roof, which was completed in 1573. Generations of royalty have dined on the 29-foot oak High Table – reputedly a gift from Elizabeth I. 1. Installation

On 9 July 2021 I had the honour to be installed as the 33 rd Master of the Water Conservators’ Company. This blog will track my (and the Company’s) engagements during my year of office. To those who have a sense of déjà vu , you’re right. I was Master in 2015-16 and have been Elected again because the Wardens were unable to serve in 2021-22. The Court also installed Christine Jervis as Thames Warden, Past Master Colin Drummond as Fleet Warden and Martin Bigg as Walbrook Warden to serve the Membership in 2021-22. Two previous Past Masters, Mark Lane and Rob Casey have struggled, successfully, to keep the Company alive through the use of webinars and remote working. Indeed, the monthly technical presentations have reached an audience of over 130 at times. These webinars will continue for the time being even as the Company opens up to face to face meetings.
