15. 2021 Pan Livery Conference, October 6, 2021

The Livery gave £72 million to deserving causes in 2019/20 and is one of the top six grant makers in the UK. This was one of the facts shared at the 2021 Pan Livery Conference on 6 October at the Mercers’ Hall. Walbrook Warden Martin Bigg represented the Water Conservators.

The objectives of the conference included increasing understanding of livery philanthropy, capturing ideas to increase its scale and impact, improving communications and encouraging further collaboration.

Over 100 Livery company and City representatives heard Alderman Sir Charles Bowman, Chair of the Pan-Livery Steering Group, set out the challenges to the 48,000 Liverymen and Freemen in their activities, profile and communications.

This was followed by an upbeat presentation by the Lord Mayor, who included the Livery as contributors to the recovery post-Covid.

Speakers asked a series of interactive questions on the membership of the livery and perceptions internally and externally, which provided some difficult home truths. There was an update to the publication in October 2019 of “Communicating about the Livery” and a presentation on the “Philanthropic Giving by Livery Companies” – the results of the Pan-Livery 2020 survey.

The Livery gave £72 million in 2019/20, up 12% on 2018. Half was for young people and education. The Livery movement is one of the top six grant makers in the UK. Current Liverymen and Freemen donated or raised £6 million and contributed at least a further £5.7 million in pro-bono and volunteering in 2019/20.

In a plenary session on improving Pan-Livery actions and communications, there was a warm discussion on the roles of the City Livery Committee, the Pan-Livery Group, the Lord Mayor’s Office and the individual companies.  This was followed by a presentation and discussion on a communications framework and plan.

Martin reports it was a packed day.  He has asked for copies of the presentations and questions/answers sessions to help our Company in its current deliberations about charity and our place in the City.
