4. Twenty years Affiliation with Maidstone Sea Cadets, August 21, 2021

On 21 August 2021, I joined WCT Trustees and partners in Maidstone to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Affiliation between Maidstone Sea Cadets (T.S. Scott) and the Company. At the invitation of Officer in Charge, P.O. Stephen Pilkinton, and in the presence of the Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Fay Gooch, the Sea Cadets organised a display of the activities covered by the Unit followed by a lunch prepared by them. I assisted in the award of qualifications and prizes and spoke of the pride the Company has in its link with this active youth organisation.

The Trust has funded the cost of a berth in the Sea Cadets’ training ship for the best cadet, whose name is inscriber on a plaque. This year, Stephen asked that the inscription mention all cadets, recognising their contribution to keeping the Unit operating during the pandemic.

Over the years, the Trust has responded to requests for financial assistance. In 2010, Trustees helped with the cost of a new Trinity 500 Rowing Boat.

More recently, the Trust made a substantial contribution to a new landing stage when the old one became unserviceable.

The Company and Trustees were thanked for their continuing interest in the Unit and both sides looked forward to a further 20 years of cooperation. In turn, we thanked the Unit for organising a thorough presentation of the Unit’s activities.

It is customary for the Master to arrange a visit to somewhere that reflects his and the Company’s interests. For the last year, my Consort, Georgina, has been trying to get the Venetian authorities to allow us to visit the flood defences. Due to the pandemic, this was not possible but the boat we stayed on, the Michelangelo , did approach some of them. Mostly tied up near St Mark’s Square, we had the opportunity to visit the main sights using the water buses, as well as taking the ‘secret itinerary’ tour at the Doge’s Palace, visiting the prison cells where Casanova was held – until he escaped!   As usual (for us anyway) we got lost on day 1 – but they say if you haven’t got lost walking in Venice, you haven’t been there! I am grateful for Georgina’s hard work, without which this visit would not have been possible, and the endless good humour of the Conservators and partners who made this visit so enjoyable.

56. Tour of the Middle Temple, March 30, 2022

The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, commonly known simply as Middle Temple, is one of the four Inns of Court exclusively entitled to call their members to the English Bar as barristers. The other are the Inner Temple, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn. The Middle Temple has been at the heart of the legal system since the sixteenth century. With ancient wooden panels dating from 1597, stunning stained glass and the fine timber roof of Middle Temple Hall, the Middle Temple is a unique piece of London history. The Consort’s tour for Company Members and friends was guided by ‘Tim’, starting with the Middle Temple Hall , with its magnificent double-hammer beam roof, which was completed in 1573. Generations of royalty have dined on the 29-foot oak High Table – reputedly a gift from Elizabeth I. 28. A Service of Remembrance, November 14, 2021

A Service of Remembrance with The Commemoration for the Fallen was held at St Paul’s Cathedral on Remembrance Sunday led by The Very Reverend Dr David Ison, Dean. It was attended by the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs, Livery Masters and Clerks, and the General Public. Water Conservators were represented by Walbrook Warden Martin Bigg and Master Peter Hall. The First Lesson was read by Lance Corporal Kitty Connolly from the City of London Combined Cadet Force and the Second by the Lord Mayor, Alderman Vincent Keaveney. The Service continued with the Commemoration and the Last Post, followed by the Reveille and Blessing. The Civic Party and Livery Masters and Clerks then processed along Cheapside to the London Troops War Memorial, located in front of the Royal Exchange .
