12. The Water pre-Walk, September 26, 2021

On 26 September 2021, Deputy Master, Rob Casey and I set off to walk the route of the proposed Charity Walk, scheduled for 10 October.

 

It may not occur to you that there is a pre-walk but, obviously, it is essential for health and safety reasons and, as important, it defines the route we choose for the formal walk on 10 October. For the last 10 years we have pre-walked the routes – for the simple reason that pre-walks tend to cut 2-3 miles off the actual route! We look at all possible locations and themes. This year it’s fountains - and there are 20-30 scattered around the City, many in some sort of terminal decline as drinking fountains.

The actual walk is on 10 October and we are encouraging everybody to join us. It will be 5 miles or so on flat pavements. We are collecting for the Water Conservation Trust’s schools’ programme. Aldgate School

 

We walked past the Aldgate School and there was a local festival organised by the City of London. Invited in, we inspected the drinking fountains installed by Trustees in the playground about two years ago, to replace single use plastic bottles. Ours still worked!

 

So, the route is fixed, all we need now is you.

It is customary for the Master to arrange a visit to somewhere that reflects his and the Company’s interests. For the last year, my Consort, Georgina, has been trying to get the Venetian authorities to allow us to visit the flood defences. Due to the pandemic, this was not possible but the boat we stayed on, the Michelangelo , did approach some of them. Mostly tied up near St Mark’s Square, we had the opportunity to visit the main sights using the water buses, as well as taking the ‘secret itinerary’ tour at the Doge’s Palace, visiting the prison cells where Casanova was held – until he escaped!   As usual (for us anyway) we got lost on day 1 – but they say if you haven’t got lost walking in Venice, you haven’t been there! I am grateful for Georgina’s hard work, without which this visit would not have been possible, and the endless good humour of the Conservators and partners who made this visit so enjoyable.

56. Tour of the Middle Temple, March 30, 2022

The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, commonly known simply as Middle Temple, is one of the four Inns of Court exclusively entitled to call their members to the English Bar as barristers. The other are the Inner Temple, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn. The Middle Temple has been at the heart of the legal system since the sixteenth century. With ancient wooden panels dating from 1597, stunning stained glass and the fine timber roof of Middle Temple Hall, the Middle Temple is a unique piece of London history. The Consort’s tour for Company Members and friends was guided by ‘Tim’, starting with the Middle Temple Hall , with its magnificent double-hammer beam roof, which was completed in 1573. Generations of royalty have dined on the 29-foot oak High Table – reputedly a gift from Elizabeth I. 28. A Service of Remembrance, November 14, 2021

A Service of Remembrance with The Commemoration for the Fallen was held at St Paul’s Cathedral on Remembrance Sunday led by The Very Reverend Dr David Ison, Dean. It was attended by the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs, Livery Masters and Clerks, and the General Public. Water Conservators were represented by Walbrook Warden Martin Bigg and Master Peter Hall. The First Lesson was read by Lance Corporal Kitty Connolly from the City of London Combined Cadet Force and the Second by the Lord Mayor, Alderman Vincent Keaveney. The Service continued with the Commemoration and the Last Post, followed by the Reveille and Blessing. The Civic Party and Livery Masters and Clerks then processed along Cheapside to the London Troops War Memorial, located in front of the Royal Exchange .
